The Table Turning, 2006
16 mm film, single projection, b & w, 5min 30secs loop
The Table Turning shows a table bearing four tortoises. Tied to the legs of a table, the shelled animals are unable to escape. However, with joint, mutual forces, they manage to set the table in motion. The artist uses the table in its functional, metaphorical and object sense suggesting a play of power, relationship and manipulation. Are the tortoises engaged in a hopeless battle or are our efforts to domesticate them, futile?
