res derelictae II: Peter Buggenhout

18 July - 7 September 2008

The Belgian artist Peter Buggenhout (born 1963) started his career as a painter and drawer. In 1989 his paintings exploded into 3D. Since then Buggenhout has been creating sculptures and huge installations with dust titled "The Blind Leading the Blind", using waste material (iron slag/polystyrene/polyester), plastic packaging, rubbish and residue, with “abject”, trash and rejected material like blood and intestines.

In the legal tradition ‘res derelictae’ is a term used for abandoned assets or as Peter Buggenhout calls them ‘objects without owner’. Examples of res derelictae are rubbish, debris, waste material, but also inventions and artistic creations, subsurface minerals and orbital spaces.
