Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, 2015
Artist’s hair, watercolor and gouache on wasli paper
11.75 x 8.5 inches
In Mirror, Mirror on the Wall – Kolkata-based Meenakshi Sengupta explores the delicate space related to the politics of feminine beauty - its valorisation and exploitation in modern society. She covers the space where a mirror ought to be, with her own hair - creating visual discomfort. By celebrating the unnatural presence of hair, she suggests that its presence or absence on a woman’s body has nothing to do with beauty.
